You land at Gimpo Airport, grab your two massive 25kg suitcases, and follow the signs to Subway Line 9 (the Express train heading toward Gangnam). It is 8:00 AM on a Tuesday. The train doors open, and it is so packed with commuters that you cannot breathe. Your ribs are being crushed, your luggage is pinned beneath a crowd of angry office workers, and when your stop arrives, you physically cannot push through the wall of humans to get off the train.
Gimpo Airport is incredibly close to downtown Seoul, making it far superior to Incheon for domestic flights to Jeju Island or short-haul flights to Japan. However, its primary subway connection is notorious across the country.
We understand that taking the subway is the cheapest and usually the most efficient way to travel. But Seoul’s rush hour operates on a brutal scale. By understanding the “Hell Train” (Jiok-cheol) phenomenon, utilizing the AREX alternative, and realizing how cheap metered taxis are from Gimpo, you can save yourself a terrifying transit experience.
1. The Subway Line 9 Trap (Jiok-cheol)
Subway Line 9 (the brown line) is infamously known as the “Hell Train” (지옥철) by Seoul locals because it connects the residential western suburbs directly to the Gangnam financial district. If you are carrying large luggage, you MUST NOT ride the Line 9 Express train between 7:30 AM – 9:00 AM, or 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM. The crush of human bodies is legitimately dangerous, and locals will be highly aggressive if your massive suitcases take up standing room.
2. The Safe Alternative: AREX Commuter Train
If you arrive during rush hour and must take the subway, walk past the Line 9 gates and use the AREX (Airport Railroad Express) blue commuter line instead. This train runs from Gimpo to Hongdae (Hongik University) and Seoul Station. Because it is a dedicated airport/commuter line with wider cars, it handles luggage significantly better and is vastly less crowded than Line 9.
3. Metered Taxis: The Gimpo Advantage
Unlike Incheon Airport (which is 1.5 hours away and costs $60+ in a taxi), Gimpo Airport is practically inside the Seoul city limits. If you are traveling to Hongdae, Yeouido, or even central Seoul, taking an official metered taxi or Kakao T is incredibly cheap (roughly ₩15,000 to ₩25,000, or $11 to $18 USD). If you have two people and heavy luggage, completely ignore the subway and grab a taxi right outside the arrivals hall. It will drop you off exactly at your hotel lobby.
